Dive Brief:
- Time has published a list of movers, shakers and influencers in the food world it calls "the 13 Gods of Food."
- The magazine says those on the list have roles in "working the magical thinking and eating that reaches our dinner tables.
- Just one company, True World Fish, which supplies raw fish to sushi makers, is on the list. Well-known people include writer Michael Pollan, of the "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." mantra; and chef Dan Barber of Blue Hill at Stone Barns, who turned kale into a foodie phenomenon.
Dive Insight:
Lists like this are magnets for criticism. And this particular list is particularly troubling because it fails to list a single major female chef on the list. That's generating a lot of negative press. But women aren't excluded entirely from the God pantheon. Our particular favorite choice is Ertharin Cousin, who runs the U.N. World Food Programme. No one does more to combat hunger. And that makes her a god in our book.
