Beverage giants including PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are adding protein and other functional ingredients to keep up with a wave of demand for products boosting health and wellness.

Over the past six months, several big brands have created functional versions of their classic recipes or otherwise reformulated their offerings, including Capri Sun with electrolytes and Pure Leaf tea with focus-boosting properties. Across demographics, consumers are increasingly seeking out more hydrating beverages, as well as drinks that include naturally occurring caffeine, collagen and added vitamins.

But simply having the right ingredient isn't enough, especially as the functional drink category becomes more crowded. Many stalwart brands like Premier Protein, Gatorade and Muscle Milk are trying to compete by finding potential white spaces and launching new-to-category innovations such as protein soda or sparkling hydration drinks.
