Budweiser and Pepsi captured headlines with their new packaging rollouts this year, and other companies are hard at work re-inventing their own bottles and cans. So which launches made us take a second look so far in 2013? Here are Food Dive's five favorites:
5. THE FLIP BOTTLE
Vincent Allora created and patented his design concept for a bottle that doubles as a drinking class a decade ago. Now, he and his business partner Scott Clark are trying to push the product before the patent runs out in nine years, Clark explained to Packaging Digest. "The Flip Bottle," as they have called it, opens on two ends. What do you think—novelty or game-changer?

4. INTERACTIVE HEINEKEN IGNITE BOTTLES
For drinkers who feel like their beer bottles can't keep up with them on the dance floor, Heineken decided to design a bottle with an accelerometer and LEDs that light up when they encounter behaviors such as drinking, clinking and music. The brewer calls the concept "Heineken Ignite."
3. FONTERRA'S LIGHT-PROOF MILK BOTTLES
New Zealand-based dairy powerhouse Fonterra makes some bold claims with its new "world-first" milk bottle, which it says will block 100% of sunlight. The end result should be milk that stays fresher longer while keeping flavor intact.

2. REDESIGNED PEPSI BOTTLES
PepsiCo unveiled the first bottle redesign for its soft drink namesake in 17 years in March. The new Pepsi bottles prioritize ergonomics and beverage visibility with a more minimalist approach to labels. But do you think simplicity was the best choice here?

1. BOW-TIE BUDWEISER BEER CANS
The most talked about beer can re-imagining in 2013 will likely be this new Budweiser can that looks like it had its belt tightened in an attempt to emulate the brand's famous logo. The cans ultimately use more aluminum and carry less beer per can than Bud's traditional drinking vessels, putting pressure on the new design to wow consumers to the point of not caring.
