Dive Brief:
- Designer Yves Behar says the visual effect of seeing a geyser of bubbles shoot through the capsule of water was at the heart of his Red Dot Design Award-winning SodaStream Source bottle design.
- Behar's firm, Fuseproject, gave the eco-friendly home-carbonation system a minimalist design that still delivers "fireworks"—a teardrop-shaped bottle that calls to mind the environmental aspect of the product and also plays off of the rigid look of the machine, which it snaps into instead of screwing.
- According to SodaStream, the reusable bottles, which are rated to have a 5,000-use cycle, can cut 550 disposable bottles per year in a single household.
- The company recently partnered with Behar again for the design of its SodaStream Play machine, which makes a colorful design statement in the kitchen.

Dive Insight:
That Source's design draws attention to SodaStream's eco-friendly emphasis will likely serve to enhance its status as a competitor to major soft drink companies. Earlier this year, the company partnered with Ocean Spray, bringing Cranberry, Cranberry-Grape and Cranberry-Raspberry juice blend concentrates to the home carbonation system. It also doesn't hurt that it reached out to 100 million potential customers on Super Bowl Sunday to call attention to what CEO Daniel Birnbaum says is "a smarter way to enjoy soft drinks."
