In addition to the new flavors, the iconic chocolatier reformulated its entire line of filled chocolate bars with the intention of reducing consumer guilt when eating Ghirardelli chocolate. The line underwent a packaging redesign while the bars' chocolate square were remade to break more easily into smaller fragments. Rick Lingle of Packaging Digest breaks down the alterations:
According to a Ghirardelli spokesperson, the existing carton has a flap printed with the words "Tear here to open," which many consumers would pull all the way down and thus have the whole carton opened like a book. When the whole flap is ripped open there is not really a clean way to store the rest of the bar. With the new package, consumers are instructed to lift from the top for a clean opening of the top flap. That allows them to slide the bar a little ways out of the carton, enjoy a few pieces and then slide the remaining portions back into the carton.
