Dive Brief:
- Doritos has named the five finalists in its Crash the Super Bowl commercial contest. This year's contest accepted entries from 30 countries. But four of the five finalists are American, while one finalist is from Australia.
- PepsiCo's Doritos will name the winner—who will collect a $1 million prize—by airing the commercial during the Super Bowl.
- All five commercials are funny. Two feature kids. Two feature moronic office workers. One is about moronic laborers. And one features—an ostrich.
Dive Insight:
We love this contest. And we're particularly impressed by this year's finalists. But few things seem as predictable as television commercials for snack foods. It's as if there's a requirement that these things have a cute kid, an idiot adult or an animal that acts out of character.
Our favorite is "Time Machine," which has both a clueless adult and a cute kid. If it only had a meerkat that acted like a ballerina or something, then it would be a sure winner.
