Dive Brief:
- Sunny Delight Beverages has begun test marketing of a carbonated energy drink dubbed SunnyD X.
- The drink is available in 16-oz cans and comes in three flavors
- Sunny Delight has begun testing the product in Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Dive Insight:
Sunny Delight is taking an unusual approach to the energy-drink game in creating a product that parents of teenagers may want their kids to drink -- at least as compared to the competitors.
SunnyD X doesn't depend on caffeine or taurine to provide energy. Rather, the beverage is a mix of carbohydrates and vitamins. Certainly that's a healthier mix than what is customarily found in energy drinks. Perhaps parents will view SunnyD X as less likely to lead to cigarette smoking and spending too much time staring at video screens.
