Dive Brief:
- Royal DSM will build a new polymerization plant in Augusta, GA, to provide material for plastic wrap used in the food industry.
- The new plant, to be built next door to an existing DSM facility, will manufacture a high-viscous version of DSM's Akulon brand polymer.
- Work on the new facility should be completed in 2016. DSM expects to add 20 workers to its employment roll.
Dive Insight:
The new plant will mark the first time that DSM makes a high-viscous version of its nylon polymer here in the U.S. Previously, packaging material manufacturers had to import it from DSM's European operations.
Now DSM says the market for the material here is strong enough to justify domestic manufacturing, and that the company is eyeing the South American market as well.
