Dive Brief:
- Kraft and Mondelez are facing a proposed class action lawsuit representing wheat futures and options traders for allegedly altering the cost of wheat.
- The suit, filed Thursday by futures trader Richard Dennis, comes shortly following the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission's lawsuit against the companies.
- Dennis' suit brought up comparable claims, alleging the companies "manipulating prices of cash wheat and wheat futures contracts on the Chicago Board of Trade from 2003 to January 2014, boosting revenue and trading profit," reports Reuters.
Dive Insight:
Well, with both the CFTC lawsuit and this new one filed, it doesn't appear this issue is going away anytime soon. However, it's unclear if there will be any tangible impact for either company. At least for the CFTC case, Kraft appears to not be too concerned. Mondelez would take most of the charges, while the latter company said neither a fine nor settlement would greatly affect investors.
