• According to the lawyers representing  Valley Meat Co., the FDA had no problem leaving a recommendation for an immediate grant of inspection to the Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS). 
• This would mean Valley Meat Co., based in New Mexico, could very well become the first horse slaughtering facility to operate in the U.S. in 5 years.
• The owners of the facility said they passed FDA inspection last year and are waiting on the agency to finalize antibiotic regulations for horse meat.

USDA isn’t yet commenting. The Obama Administration, which first went along with lifting the ban, now wants to exclude money for inspectors at horse slaughter plants from the 2014 budget. There’s also Congressional action going on that might or might not result in restoration of the ban.
