From pumpkin spice talk to Wheaties beer, below are some interesting reads from the week:
It's a little early for pumpkin spice … This time, it's pumpkin spice cereal from Kellogg: pumpkin spice-flavored Frosted Mini-Wheats. Distribution is trudging along with no set date for full U.S. rollout. I'm balking at the thought of summer being over, but then again, it's pumpkin spice for crying out loud.
Who knew that a watermelon's flesh is its placenta? Not me. National Geographic's "The Plate" has that and more details about watermelon.
Can you paint with all the colors of the burger?
So, um, colorful burgers are a trend now. At least in Asia. KFC is launching pink and black burgers in Chinese locations.
General Mills made a Wheaties-branded Hefweizen —a wheat beer — with craft brewery Fulton, also located in General Mills-headquartered Minneapolis. It will hit the Twin Cities market in Minnesota starting Aug. 26 — and that’s the only place you can get it for now.
"We'll see how people react to it," according to Fulton president and co-founder Ryan Petz. "If it's something everybody loves, we'll obviously consider doing it again in a bigger and more widely distributed way in the future."
Other beer news this week? The spreadable kind.
The Washington Post’s Roberto A. Ferdman takes a deep dive into McDonald's problems, including noting the trend toward fast casual eateries like Chipotle, Panera, and Shake Shack. Bottom line: It's not looking good. And this photo clearly indicates that.
