Dive Brief:
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced a recall of 226,710 pounds of processed egg products from Lacey, Wash.-based Nutriom LLC.
- A number of the company's products may be contaminated with Salmonella, including consumer-size packages of OvaEasy Plain Whole Egg, OvaEasy Boil-in-Bag Egg Mix, Egg Crystal, and OvaEasy UGR H&S.
- Products included in the recall were shipped nationwide and to Canada, along with U.S. military installations in the U.S. and abroad, and have the establishment number "INSPECTED EGG PRODUCTS PLANT 21493G." They were made between Feb. 28, 2013, and Feb. 8, 2014.
Dive Insight:
Washington State Laboratories discovered the potential contamination as a result of a Nutriom billing inquiry. The FSIS' website has a list of complete details on the recalled products. While most healthy people can fight off Salmonella with little difficulty, it's important to remember that it is among the most dangerous foodborne pathogens and shouldn't be taken lightly by anyone.
