The turkey is synonymous with Thanksgiving in the United States. But how high does it really rank in the U.S. poultry market? Turkey is actually an underdog in the fight for American's dinner plates, according to data compiled by Packaged Facts. The clear winner in the rankings is chicken (in all of its forms), whether fresh or frozen. Although use of fresh or frozen whole turkey, as well as fresh whole chicken, has declined since 2004.
Survey respondents in 2013 chose chicken over turkey in every category, with chicken breast being the poultry of choice 65% of the time. Most Americans surveyed enjoy chicken breast, and they want it fresh, not frozen. So in the scheme of things, turkey may be more of an oddity dish than a staple of our diets. That's just some food for thought this Thanksgiving.
