Dive Brief:
- Seattle-based Trident Seafoods will purchase the assets of Western Alaska Fisheries from Japan's Maruha-Nichiro’s Westward Seafoods. Terms of the deal were not released.
- The purchase gives Trident control of a processing facility in Kodiak, AK, that handles some 45 million pounds of cod, pollock, and salmon a year.
- The deal comes as Trident, which sells ready-to-prepare seafood for foodservice and retail, prepares to open a new processing facility in Georgia and close one in Virginia.
Dive Insight:
Suddenly it seems that everywhere we turn there's merger and acquisition activity in the seafood business, and that activity has a sort of frantic level of buy/build/grow and "do it now" about it. We can't imagine that any company outside of seafood would be doing what Trident is doing: buying one plant just a half-mile away from its existing plant, closing a completely different plant, and opening yet another, all in the same month.
