Dive Brief:
- As bone broth becomes more popular, particularly among the growing population of Paleo diet followers, it was only a matter of time before manufacturers brought bone broth out of consumers' homes and into the grocery store.
- LonoLife, in conjunction with San Diego Coffee Co., debuted its bone broth (among other broth varieties) in single-serve packaging compatible with the Keurig system.
- LonoLife primarily depends on e-commerce to reach consumers, but the company is trying to place its products in specialty and mainstream retail stores.
Dive Insight:
In September, Keurig and Campbell debuted Campbell's Soup K-Cups, the first non-beverage K-Cups product from Keurig. This innovation helped pave the way for companies, including LonoLife, to repurpose Keurig's single-serve format for more than just coffee.
However, Campbell's wasn't the first non-beverage product to be made for a Keurig machine, just the first made in conjunction with Keurig in the official K-Cup format. General Mills introduced single-serve Nature Valley oatmeal that could be made with Keurig machines in 2014.
Bone broth hasn't caught on among major manufacturers yet, but as popularity continues to grow, companies like Campbell, which is looking for a way to turn around its canned soup business, has an avenue for growth potential.
