Dive Brief:
- Investigators are trying once more to find the culprit who is sticking sewing needles in potatoes on Prince Edward Island.
- Grower-shipper Cavendish Farms says more of the needles were found in potatoes that were harvested Dec. 27 and 28 and destined for processing into French fries.
- Hundreds of thousands of pounds of potatoes have been destroyed since the first instance of tampering was discovered in October.
Dive Insight:
This crime remains as baffling and unexplainable today as when consumers first found the needles in potatoes at Canadian retailers. But perhaps an explanation will come soon. The first tamperings were connected to PEI grower Linkletter Farms. The latest were detected on produce from Cavendish Farms. It would seem likely that the number of people with access to both sources is quite small, making it possible that an arrest will come soon.
