Dive Brief:
- ConAgra will close a plant in Kentwood, Mich., and terminate 260 workers.
- The facility is the former site of Elan Nutrition, a maker of private-label nutrition and snack bars, which ConAgra purchased in May 2010 for an undisclosed sum.
- Today, the plant still makes those snack bars, as well as some cereal products.
Dive Insight:
ConAgra said it was experiencing some drops in sales at some plants, and that it intended to move the work done in Kentwood to facilities in California and Minnesota. We understand such decisions. Markets change, and companies do what they must to remain profitable.
But we're struck by just how fast this market appears to have changed. ConAgra bought the business in 2010. Then in March 2012, ConAgra expanded operations there and added a new production line to make nutrition and cereal bars.
