Dive Brief:
- The continuing flooding in Northern Colorado forced JBS USA to close one of the largest beef-processing facilities in the United States.
- The plant itself, located in Greeley, Colo., has not been damaged by the floodwaters. Many roads leading to and from the plant, however, are unpassable.
- JBS’ human resources department ordered workers to avoid coming to the plant for their own safety.
Dive Insight:
Barring a weather miracle, we’re likely to see more of this in coming days. Greeley is home to dozens of large-scale meat and cheese processing facilities. And although the town itself appears able to withstand the floods, surrounding communities are growing increasingly dangerous. Two rivers that are draining the runoff from the five-day rain storm that caused the flooding merge just east of Greeley.
