Dive Brief:
- Coca-Cola is no longer the top brand on Interbrand's annual listing.
- The soft-drink company has held the top slot since the list was first created 13 years ago.
- Coke falls two slots to third-place in this year's list, behind Apple and Google.
- The new list demonstrates the increasing importance of technology brands in our lives. After Coca-Cola, the only food/beverage brand in the top 20 is McDonald's.
Dive Insight:
Somehow we find this news quite depressing. Although we only have ourselves to blame. We're Apple fan boys ourselves—obsessed with our iPhones and whatnot. Still, a world where Coke is not the most valuable brand seems just plain wrong to us.
Still, we have little hope that Coke will return to the top slot. It seems to us that a brand name that has grown synonymous with poor health cannot rise again in a new, health-focused, consumer-empowered world.
