- Chiquita is asking a U.S. Court of Appeals to dismiss a series of lawsuits that allege the fresh-fruit company supported a right-wing paramilitary group in Latin America, saying that courts in the United States do not have jurisdiction.
- Thousands of people were killed in civil conflicts in Colombia, where Chiquita owns plantations. Relatives of those killed allege that Chiquita is complicit in the deaths and have filed lawsuits.
- Chiquita admitted in 2007 that it had made payments to the group, AUC, which is labeled a terrorist organization by the United States.

This is a nasty case involving extraordinary brutality, and it's no wonder that Chiquita would like to keep the past in the past.
But the produce company has had little success in getting past the scandal so far. Late last year, U.S. regulators ruled that Chiquita needed to surrender documents that outline the company's connections to terrorist groups.
