Dive Brief:
- Cheerios, the breakfast cereal and toddlers' finger food beloved by millions, will run a commercial during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.
- The ad marks the first time in 18 years that the General Mills brand has advertised during the football championship game.
- Details on the ad campaign have not been released. But expectations are that General Mills will air a new spot in its "Love" campaign. Those emotionally touching spots featured an interracial couple. The ads attracted racist comments online, but were a big hit with consumers.
Dive Insight:
So here's the thing -- we don't much care for football. We do, however, love Super Bowl ads. And this year we are absolutely thrilled to see that Cheerios is coming to the Super Bowl and is likely to run a new "Love" spot. Here's our prediction (and hope): the new Cheerios ad will feature a same-sex couple with children. And when it airs, we and millions of others will say, "it's about time."
