Dive Brief:
- Cadbury Malaysia issued a recall of two types of candy bars in the country after a government inspection found pork DNA in the products.
- The company, part of Mondelez International, is said to be conducting a full review of its supply chain and processing systems in an effort to find the source of contamination.
- Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim nation. Reaction from religious leaders to the contamination was swift -- more than a dozen organizations have called for a boycott of the company.
Dive Insight:
Cadbury, like just about every other company that does business in the Muslim world, is supposed to be producing food that meets the religious and health standards known as halal.
And in halal, as in the kosher standards of Jews, pork is forbidden.
It seems that it is going to be a very long time, if ever, before Cadbury can recover from the loss of trust in the Muslim world.
