Dive Brief:
- Aseptia, the North Carolina-based company specializing in food packaging and processing technology just brought in a $28M Series C funding round, which will be applied to growing its Wright Foods subsidiary.
- Wright Foods utilizes state-of-the-art technology developed at North Carolina State University to extend the shelf life of food without the need for preservatives or refrigeration for as long as 12 months.
- The benefits of using this process is that it decreases distribution costs, packaging material, and energy, qualifying it as sustainable.
Dive Insight:
The funding amounts to about half of the $58 million Aseptia said it is planning to spend to expand its food processing and packaging plant in Troy, NY. As we reported here in July, the expansion is very good news for the region, as it would bring 505 new jobs to an area plagued by high unemployment.
Merrette Moore, the founder and managing director of Lookout Capital, which is contributing to this round of funding declares,“We believe the company’s technology and process have revolutionary implications for the food industry."
