Dive Brief:
- Royal Ahold, the Dutch parent of supermarket chains Stop & Shop and Giant, has set an ambitious goal of 80% growth in online sales during the next three years.
- Ahold has invested heavily in online shopping capability. The company owns Peapod, a U.S. based online grocer, as well as Dutch retailer bol.com.
- The company, which saw sales rise in its most recent quarter, expects Peapod to hit $590 million in sales this year.
Dive Insight:
The fact that Peapod is expected to generate more than a half-billion sales this year is no small accomplishment. And as we've noted before, its success stands in sharp contrast to most of the other online grocers that have come and gone in the past two decades.
