Dive Brief:
- A series of tornados earlier this week destroyed poultry farms and killed hundreds of thousands of birds.
- Particularly hard-hit was a facility in the town of Noxapeter, MS. A twister made a direct hit on the farm, leveling eight poultry houses, each of which held 28,500 broiler chickens each.
- Tyson has supplier relationships with some 1,500 poultry farms in the state. The company has sent workers to assist with the clean-up.
Dive Insight:
Tyson and others in the poultry business must look to replace birds in the supply chain, but it's too early in the process to say how that will shake out. We'll be looking at upcoming earnings reports to see how expensive the twisters were to the poultry industry.
