Dive Brief:
- Peapod is offering salad mixes, mint and other greens from Farmedhere, which uses aquaponic techniques to grow food indoors.
- Farmedhere grows the plants in stacks of beds that use recycled water to move nutrients. No soil is needed. No chemicals or pesticides are used.
- Farmedhere also uses compostable packaging -- making the entire process of getting from seed to table about as low-impact on the environment as is possible.
Dive Insight:
We're big fans of aquaponics, which offers answers to so many of the world's food problems. The techniques allow for natural foods, produced in any location, without chemicals, requiring less space per plant than conventional farming, etc. But we recognize that aquaponics is still a little ... weird. The people who practice it tend to be a sort of wacky hybrid of old hippie and young tech geek. Its not a pretty combination.
So we welcome any move that professionalizes aquaponic farming and brings its food to the masses. Thanks Peapod and Farmedhere!
