Kraft Heinz is investing $30 million to upgrade a marshmallow and caramel plant in Kendallville, Indiana.
The money will be used to enhance production lines and make broader improvements across the plant “to better position us to meet the evolving needs of our consumers and customers,” a Kraft Heinz spokesperson said in an email.
The facility produces a bulk of Kraft Heinz’s Jet-Puffed products, including marshmallows and marshmallow cream, as well as Kraft Caramels. The facility is the sole plant for both brands and employs 325 people.
“Kraft Heinz’s investment in the Kendallville manufacturing facility reflects our continued focus on strengthening our capabilities to support the long-term growth of our business,” the spokesperson said.
Last year, the food maker confirmed it planned to spend $3 billion on its U.S. manufacturing facilities, its largest investment in its plants in decades. The plan included the addition of 3,500 employees and a $400 million distribution center in Illinois.
Kraft Heinz is also in the midst of a turnaround plan and is spending $100 million toward marketing and innovation to play more aggressively in emerging consumer trends. The company has for example tailored its innovation strategy to reach consumers with dietary restrictions that haven’t been able to interact with its products before.
In Kraft Heinz’s most recent quarter, net sales totaled about $6 billion, flat compared to the prior year.
