Dive Brief:
- Kraft Foods/Oscar Mayer's Kirksville, MO, facility is stopping its bacon production by 2015's close, according to the Kirksville Daily Express. The work will move to the company's facility in Coshocton, OH, where production is only catered to bacon.
- In a memo to its staff, the food giant said it would start concentrating its bacon production "in the April to June timeframe of 2015."
- Close to 275 people - those that work on the bacon line of the plant - are expected to lose their jobs, according to Kraft spokesperson Joyce Hodel. Hodel said the merger's intent is "to build manufacturing scale, lower our overhead and total production costs and make more effective use of our manufacturing assets."
Dive Insight:
It appears this will have a big effect on the Kirksville, MO, community - the facility was a large employer there. This could also be linked to Kraft's low sales, as it fired many of its advertising agencies earlier this week.
