From an ode to the Oreo to a vegetarian drive-thru, below are some interesting reads from the week:
I’d like a slice of pizza and goat milk, please
Have you ever been sitting at a farm and just craved a slice of pizza? Of course you have. This takes farm-to-table to a whole new level, reports Eater.
All right, the secret’s out: here at Food Dive — we’re cookie fiends. One particular cookie that’s outpacing the rest is Mondelez’s Oreos. According to Euromonitor, U.S. sales of Oreos have soared more than 60% since 2005. That being said, sales of Mondelez’s cookie business have stagnated in the U.S., so maybe its new Oreo Thins can turn things around — if you can accept change.
The very definition of 'overreaction'
In a form of cruel and an unusual punishment, a South Carolina couple was arrested on child neglect charges. For what, you ask? Making their daughter basically fend for herself in the woods because she ate a Pop-Tart. Two days into her planned weeklong stay, police found her. Food Dive wants this girl to know she can have as many Pop-Tarts as she wants with zero judgment.
Veggie burgers the new fast food?
If the words vegetarian drive-thru mean an answer to your prayers, keep reading. Because Amy’s Kitchen is opening a 95% organic diner in California that features a veggie burger that’s only $2.99 — less than a Big Mac. The goal? For the new restaurant to draw traditional chain customers from these venues. But maybe Amy’s should watch out for the Hamburglar. On second thought, maybe not.
General Mills went on a Twitter spree over Minions at its headquarters. A PSA: How can Minions come to the Food Dive office? Willing to negotiate.
