Dive Brief:
- Fannie May Confections Brands, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of 89 cases of its 14 ounce box of assorted chocolates wrapped in a pastel, flower-covered paper.
- One of the pieces of chocolates within the box contains peanuts, yet the food safety label failed to identify the known allergen.
- So far, there have been no reported illnesses or allergic incidences in association with the unmarked boxes of chocolates.
Dive Insight:
In the age of sometimes damaging safety scares and recalls, this was a lucky catch for Fannie May. While a labeling oversight may be easier to forgive than Roos Foods' multi-state Listeria outbreak, peanut allergies can result in a trove of highly traumatic health symptoms. For now, it seems like an highly publicized recall reaching a broad audience may be Fannie May's best bet in keeping the injury count associated with these chocolates at zero.
