Dive Brief:
- The family of Brooklyn's Cory Terry is suing Red Bull for $85 million in what may be the first wrongful death suit filed against the energy drink maker.
- The 33-year-old had a heart attack during a basketball game after drinking one of the company's caffeine-heavy drinks, which lawyer Ilya Novofastovsky says contain additional stimulants like taurine that make it more dangerous.
- The family's complaint lists nine deaths around the world linked to Red Bull, as well as scientific studies that list health hazards for adolescents and active exercisers.
Dive Insight:
As you would expect, Red Bull is insisting its products are safe, saying that "health authorities across the world have concluded that Red Bull Energy Drink is safe to consume.” The FDA has, however, linked as many as 18 deaths to energy drinks, and 13,000 emergency room visits were associated with the drinks in a 2009 study. Could warning labels be on the way?
