Coca-Cola filed a trademark application on July 9 for the term “Spricy,” indicating the beverage giant may be giving spicy beverages another shot.
The company said in the trademark application for “Spricy” that it has a “bona fide intention” of using the phrase on soft drinks, likely Sprite.
While a trademark application doesn’t guarantee a new offering is coming, it does heavily suggest Coca-Cola is working on new innovation.
Josh Gerben, an intellectual property attorney, said in a blog post that filing an application is a common step for companies to take to secure a brand name before bringing a product to market.
“Because the filing is based on Coca-Cola’s stated intent to use the mark rather than current commercial use, the company would ultimately need to begin selling products under the ‘Spricy’ name before the trademark can be fully registered,” Gerben wrote.
A Coca-Cola spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to Food Dive’s request for comment.
Coca-Cola launched a spiced version of its classic soda in 2024, which included raspberry and "spiced" flavors. The offering, which was meant to be Coke's first permanent flavor in years, was discontinued just seven months later.
One of the potential issues for Coke Spiced was that it was not actually spicy, but bold in flavor. It's unclear whether the new offering will bring some heat, though the name appears to be a play on "swicy," or sweet and spicy. As consumers frequently seek out unique flavor experiences, “swicy,” in particular, has seen increased interest in 2026, with TikTokers mixing soda with juice from canned jalapenos and pickles.
