Dive Insight:
We had never heard of Campbell's Milwaukee spice plant until the news broke a few years ago that Campbell was closing its New Jersey spice plant. And we quickly asked the same question that apparently everyone asks: Why did Campbell build a spice plant in Milwaukee? The answer, it turns out, is that the area around Milwaukee had quite a reputation for spices back in the early 1960s — a result of the abundance of cheese, beer and bratwurst manufacturers in the area.
