Dive Brief:
- According to the Autorité de la Concurrence, a group of companies that includes Yoplait and Lactalis were in anticompetitive practices ranging from 2006 and 2012.
- The agency fined 10 out of these 11 companies $204 million. Lactalis, which received the highest fine, intends to appeal, as does Senoble.
- General Mills denounced this "dairy cartel" in 2011, not long after it took partial control of Yoplait, the only company not fined. A spokesman for General Mills told The Wall Street Journal, "When General Mills learned of these past practices, we brought the matter to the authority, cooperated fully, and put the practices to an end."
Dive Insight:
As Consumerist points out, you don't necessarily think of yogurt as a cartel. It will be interesting to see the results of Lactalis and Senoble's appeal processes, considering the proactive approach taken by General Mills resulted in no punishment.
