Dive Brief:
- Traditional food retailers are predicted to lose about 9% of their market share by 2025, according to a new Technomic report, "Food Industry Transformation: The Next Decade." The report says that traditional retailers' sales, however, will increase by 3% each year in that time.
- Other types of food retailers are predicted to see more growth. Fresh format store sales, for example, are estimated to grow 12% per year, while online and other home meal delivery services sales among other categories will increase 13.5% per year.
- Technomic predicts that sales of organic products will reach $170 billion in 2025, up from 2013 sales of $35.1 billion.
Dive Insight:
Not all is looking grim for traditional retailers, as prepared foods is one segment for marked growth in the next decade. The report said that fresh prepared foods will grow 7.5% annually and total over $50 billion in 2025. As demand grows, so too must retailers' self-serve stations, on-site eating areas, and prepared foods staff, like butchers and bakers.
