Dive Brief:
- Dollar General offered the lowest cost total basket and the lowest cost edible-grocery basket in Kantar Retail's lastest opening price survey. This marks the second consecutive win for Dollar General. The survey is meant to determine how well retailers do in serving customers who shop based upon the lowest possible prices.
- Wal-Mart came in second in this year's survey, just as it did last year. But the margin between the two companies had shrunk from 18 percent to just 12 cents.
- At the other end of the survey was Target, which was 48 higher than Dollar General and 12 percent higher than its closest competitor, Aldi.
Dive Insight:
We're not surprised to see that Dollar General did so well in this survey. We'll admit that we've not spent a lot of time in those stores, but when we have visited we were positively shocked by some of the prices. Wal-Mart might have the reputation for low prices, but Dollar General seems to deliver them more consistently.
