Dive Brief:
- ConAgra has agreed to source 100% sustainable palm oil by December 2015.
- The decision by the maker of brands such as Chef Boyardee and Healthy Choice follows similar announcements by rival food giants like Danone and General Mills.
- ConAgra had come under pressure recently from the New York State Common Retirement Fund, a major shareholder, and Green Century Capital Management to do more to protect rainforests.
Dive Insight:
The most interesting thing about ConAgra's decision is that the Omaha-based company was already a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a 10-year old group which certifies companies that commit to helping the rainforests. But New York's retirement fund and numerous activists want food producers to do more than what RSPO requires.
