IndexBox has just published a new report, the U.S. Soft Drink Market. Analysis And Forecast to 2025. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
The revenue of the soft drink market in the U.S. amounted to $35.2B in 2018, dropping by -1.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, soft drink consumption continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015, with an increase of 15% y-o-y. In that year, the soft drink market reached its peak level of $40.4B. From 2016 to 2018, the growth of the soft drink market remained at a lower figure.
Soft Drink Production in the USA
In value terms, soft drink production amounted to $34.5B in 2018. In general, soft drink production continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015, when the output figure increased by 14% y-o-y. In that year, soft drink production reached its peak level of $38.9B. From 2016 to 2018, soft drink production growth remained at a lower figure.
Soft Drink Exports
Exports from the USA
In 2018, approx. 213K tonnes of soft drink were exported from the U.S.; surging by 10% against the previous year. Overall, soft drink exports continue to indicate a deep shrinkage.
In value terms, soft drink exports amounted to $175M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018.
Exports by Country
Chile (21K tonnes), Australia (20K tonnes) and Bahamas (11K tonnes) were the main destinations of soft drink exports from the U.S., together accounting for 24% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Chile (+27.5% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for soft drink exported from the U.S. were Australia ($19M), Chile ($13M) and the Netherlands ($8.3M), together comprising 23% of total exports.
Export Prices by Country
In 2018, the average soft drink export price amounted to $822 per tonne, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the soft drink export price continues to indicate a significant setback.
Export prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest export price was China ($1.1 per kg), while the average price for exports to British Virgin Islands ($295 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+2.8% per year), while the export prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
