Sprouts Farmers Market Adds More Stores to Manomet’s Grocery Stewardship Certification, Becomes First Food Retailer in CO and UT to Enroll
November 30, 2017
PHOENIX -- Sprouts Farmers Market, a healthy grocery store offering fresh, natural and organic foods at great prices, is deepening its sustainability commitment by enrolling more stores in Manomet’s Grocery Stewardship Certification (GSC) program. The expansion will add all of the retailer’s Colorado and Utah stores, as well as five stores in the Phoenix area and a continuation of the program for all Texas stores. The GSC works with grocery retailers to engage staff on operational sustainability concepts and to review store-level practices and equipment with an eye to increasing energy efficiency, boosting revenue and lowering costs.
Carlos Rojas, Deputy General Counsel and head of Sustainability for Sprouts Farmers Market, said “We’re proud to strengthen our sustainability efforts through ongoing team member education and engagement using the GSC. The program will help Sprouts assess savings in energy, water, and waste that can be passed along to our customers. It’s a win-win for our community.”
“Sprouts’ efforts to make healthy living easy and affordable for its customers is emboldened by their participation in the GSC,” said Peter Cooke, GSC Program Manager. “The GSC makes sustainability and responsible retailing easy, and grocers are saving more than just resources. They save money, which in turn helps keeps prices down for consumers. We’re excited to expand our work with Sprouts, and deepen both corporate and store staff knowledge of grocery sustainability.”
Launched in 2012, Manomet’s GSC program is the nation’s first and only grocery sustainability certification program, with over 750 stores participating. The purpose of the GSC is to substantially reduce the environmental impacts (waste, water use, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions) of grocery stores, consumers, and entire supply chains.
