Dive Brief:
- Consumer Reports released its annual list of best-ranked supermarkets in the country, and Wegmans, Publix, and Trader Joe’s snagged the top spots of 68 stores nationwide.
- According to The Packer, "Rankings were developed on a number of factors, including cleanliness, selection of local produce, fresh prepared meals, price, and selection of organic foods."
- Produce was one primary focus, and Consumer Reports found that only three chains, Wegmans, The Fresh Market, and Whole Foods, received glowing marks in the category. The Produce News reports, "Only around six in 10 [respondents] were completely or very satisfied with the quality of their store’s produce, meat, and poultry offerings."
Dive Insight:
Consumer Reports also found that supermarkets are responding to consumers' call for healthier foods, as 95% of supermarkets employ a registered dietician to provide insight on merchandising and marketing decisions.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Wegmans and Publix also made it onto Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list, with Wegmans actually landing a top 10 spot.
