Dive Brief:
- Tetra Pak has debuted the world's first beverage carton made entirely from plant-based materials.
- The Swiss packaging provider says the cartons, created through a partnership with chemical company Braskem, will be available commercially early next year.
- The cartons will be made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films and bio-based high-density polyethylene (HDPE) caps, both derived from sugar cane, and paperboard certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
Dive Insight:
The plant-based cartons will certainly be a hit. Consumers want products that are pure, and nothing says "all natural" than buying organic soy milk served in plant-based containers.
More importantly, Tetra Pak is making it easy for its legions of existing customers to make the switch. Companies using the standard 1-L Tetra Rex with TwistCap OSO 34 can move to the plant-based cartons without having to modify equipment.
