Dive Brief:
- Supervalu and Albertsons, which were the victims of computer hacks earlier this year, say they have uncovered additional attacks aimed at their customers' credit card information.
- Supevalu, which said in August that as many as 1,000 of the 3,300 stores it owns had been hacked, said the newly detected attack may have captured data from just four Cub Foods stores in Minnesota.
- Albertsons, which also fell victim in August, says the new attacks hit Jewel-Osco, ACME, Shaw's and Star Markets in 12 states.
Dive Insight:
When the news broke this summer about the hacks, we noted that the biggest losers were ".. the banks and payment companies. (Because) As crimes like this grow more common, it becomes clearer that it's simply not very safe to use a card."
There seems little reason to rethink that position. The world got along fine paying cash at retail for a very, very long time. And increasing numbers of people seem to be returning to that time-honored practice.
