Dive Brief:
- Pepsi True has come under attack by environmentalists, and sole distributor Amazon removed the beverage from its site temporarily.
- More than 3,700 comments and reviews - nearly all of them negative - flooded the site when sales began yesterday for the new stevia and sugar-sweetened drink.
- The commenting campaign was orchestrated by activist groups SumOfUs.org and the Rainforest Action Network, which have argued that PepsiCo hasn't committed adequately to sustainable sourcing of palm oil.
Dive Insight:
As of press time, Pepsi True is available once more on Amazon, and so are the negative reviews blasting PepsiCo.
Interestingly, the anti-Pepsi campaign comes amid loads of positive publicity for another global food giant: Unilever, which has committed to 100% sustainable sourcing of palm oil for its European foods this year.
