Dive Brief:
- Hershey unveiled a new corporate logo as part of a rebranding effort by the chocolate company.
- The new logo keeps the chocolate-bar look of the traditional logo, but drops the letter "s" and adds a representation of a piece of the candy maker's iconic "Kisses" candy.
- The initial reaction to the design was less than optimal, with critics and social media users noting that the Kisses symbol looked remarkably like...well, not like chocolate.
Dive Insight:
You have to wonder how many people at Hershey saw the new logo before it was unveiled to the entire world. Certainly not everyone sees a pile of poop when they look at it. But it's also certain that a good percentage of people do, given the popularity of the "poo" emoji on social media and iPhones. It seems almost inconceivable that no one at the company looked at the design and yelled, "Oh crap. We have to rethink this."
