Dive Brief:
- Nestlé SA’s Sweet Leaf Tea has recalled about 1.5 million bottles of tea due to potential contamination of glass fragments.
- The recall includes certain 16-ounce glass bottles of the tea distributed between Feb. 27 and Dec. 6 in the original, raspberry, peach, half-and-half lemonade, mint-and-honey, and green tea with citrus flavors.
- The company has reported no injuries but said it had received four complaints about the glass fragments.
Dive Insight:
The glass fragments were a result of glass breaking during the filling process, the company said in a news release.
Earlier this year, Kraft recalled 6.5 million boxes of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese due to potential contamination of metal pieces. Kraft also recalled more than 370,000 cases of Kraft Singles due to potential choking hazards caused by film from the wrapper sticking to the cheese product.
One report this year found that recalls and their costs were on the rise in the U.S., but Jennifer McEntire, the vice president of science operations at the Grocery Manufacturers Association, told Food Dive in April that even with the number of recalls this year, the food supply is safer than ever.
