Dive Brief:
- A collection of some of the biggest names in retail have agreed to publish unit prices online and on mobile apps, making it easier for consumers to comparison shop.
- Brick and mortar companies such as Wal-Mart, Costco, Walgreens, and CVS were joined by online retailers FreshDirect and Drugstore.com in agreeing to a request from New York State's Attorney General for more transparency.
- Amazon declined to publish its unit prices.
Dive Insight
This is very good news for consumers and AG Eric Schneiderman, who is largely responsible for making this happen.
But it's worth noting that Peapod was ahead of the game even before Schneiderman's involvement: The online grocery service owned by Royal Ahold has long published unit prices on its Website.
As for Amazon, we expect that the online giant is about to get a bit of social-media fury aimed its way.
