Dive Brief:
- Kraft Heinz has recalled another 335,000 cases of Kraft Singles after recalling 36,000 cases on July 31 due to choking hazards potentially caused by film from the wrapper sticking to the cheese product. That's about 10 times the number of Kraft Singles cases as originally thought.
- The company said it received two new reports from consumers about choking incidents, in addition to the three the company reported in July. Kraft had also received seven additional complaints about the packaging.
- The expanded recall includes shipments to several more countries, including Anguilla, the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, South Korea, St. Lucia, and more.
Dive Insight:
The initial recall was Kraft Heinz Co.'s first as a combined company. It has told consumers to return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund, but not much else has been made of the recall on the company's end.
The initial Singles recall was followed up by a second unrelated recall about a month later, when Kraft Heinz recalled 2 million pounds of turkey bacon due to potential early spoilage after receiving complaints from consumers.
Earlier this year before the two companies merged, Kraft also recalled 6.5 million macaroni and cheese boxes after reports of metal pieces being found in the product.
The recalls come amid big changes to Kraft, which is seeing significant job and cost cuts following its merger with Heinz and under 3G Capital, which is known for instituting cost-cutting measures at the companies it deals with and acquires.
