Dive Brief:
- Kellogg will shutter its 90-year-old plant in London, Ontario, later today, closing the door on a bit of the cereal maker's history in North America.
- The last group of workers at the plant (about 130 union members) will have a Christmas lunch today, and then shut down the facility for the last time.
- The end comes nearly a year to the day after Kellogg announced it would close the plant amid falling sales, eliminating 550 jobs in the Canadian city.
Dive Insight:
The worst part about the layoffs in London has been the timing. The company announced it would close up and fire its staff just weeks before Christmas last year. And now the final day is here, and it's just hours until Christmas once again.
And Kellogg isn't the only food company to have laid off workers in London recently. Times are tough there. But as we said before, "we trust that the tiny city will bounce back from its present difficulties much quicker than the cereal industry will."
