Dive Brief:
- Police are searching for the person or persons who broke into a Foster Farms chicken plant in California and used a golf club to beat 920 birds to death.
- Clues are few in the crime. Law enforcement is seeking help from the community in identifying anyone who was seen near the facility or may have reason to be angry at someone there.
- The attack is just the latest blow in what has been a tough year for Foster Farms. Last October the USDA said it suspected the company was tied to a salmonella outbreak. By July of this year, regulators forced a recall after 621 people in 27 states became infected.
Dive Insight:
As one police officer noted, the crime would take "a long time," suggesting a sort of prolonged killing frenzy. And that same officer said that "people should be alarmed" -- which is exactly the sort of thing you don't want to hear if you live or work near the plant.
