Dive Insight:
Each year, Fortune Magazine releases rankings of its most admired companies, using a formula that focuses on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility.
Nestle often finds itself at top in the consumer food products segment. This year was no different, with initiatives like reducing sugar content by 10% in products that do not meet its own nutritional criteria, and ensuring continual improvement in more challenging areas of its product portfolio.
Each of the other companies near the top have made similar commitments to getting healthier, and that was an obvious factor in their ranking. PepsiCo’s efforts to introduce new health-based products to the company’s portfolio has helped it thrive despite struggles in soda sales.
Tyson Foods, which came out on top for food production companies, scored big points for its efforts to seek innovations in technologies, business models and products that contribute to sustainability of the food supply. This is something that many of the companies on the list had in common, since many in the industry pay attention to it — as well as consumers.
